Bank Account Opening Requirements for Non-EU Clients

Updated today

Opening a Portuguese bank account requires different documents depending on your nationality, residence status, and visa type.

We divide applicants into three main categories:

  1. Nationals of the EU, Schengen Area, or United Kingdom

  2. Rest of World Nationals WITH Residence Title for EU, Schengen, or UK

  3. Rest of World Nationals WITHOUT Residence Title (EU/Schengen/UK)

⚠️ Important: If you are a non-EU national without EU residence, we can only assist you if you have:

  1. Proof that you are applying for or have received a Portuguese visa; and

  2. Visa-specific supporting documents (see below).

  3. Alternative option (for property buyers): If you do not have a visa, you may still open an account by showing savings of at least €150,000. In this case, visa documents are not required, as the account is opened based on financial capacity.
