Your NIF certificate is the official document from the Portuguese Tax Authority (Autoridade Tributária) that confirms your NIF number, registered name, address, and fiscal representative details.
Important: There is no self-service download for the NIF certificate — it must be requested through eBalcão, and the tax office will issue it as a PDF attachment in their reply.

Your NIF number and Portal das Finanças password

Step-by-Step Instructions
Step 1 — Log in to Portal das Finanças
Go to portaldasfinancas.gov.pt
Click "Iniciar Sessão" (top right corner)
Select the NIF tab, enter your NIF number and password
Click "Autenticar"
Step 2 — Open eBalcão
In the search bar at the top of the page, type "e-balcão"
Find "Atendimento e-balcão" in the results and click "Aceder"
Step 3 — Submit Your Request
Click "Registar Nova Questão" (Register New Question) under the "Pedido de Informações / Esclarecimentos" section
From the dropdown menus, select:
Tema (Subject): Registo de Contribuintes / Cadastro
Assunto (Topic): Atribut/Alter NIF-singulares
Under "Alguma destas responde as suas dúvidas?" — click "Não"
In the message box, write the following (you can copy-paste):
In Portuguese:
Bom dia,
Venho por este meio solicitar a emissão de uma certidão de identificação fiscal (documento NIF) associada ao meu número de contribuinte [YOUR NIF NUMBER].
Agradeço a vossa disponibilidade.
Com os melhores cumprimentos, [YOUR FULL NAME]
Click "Submeter" (Submit)
Step 4 — Wait for the Response
The tax office typically responds within 2–5 business days
Your NIF certificate will be attached as a PDF to their reply in eBalcão
You'll receive an email notification when there's a response — check back in eBalcão to download the document
How to Check for a Response
Log in to Portal das Finanças
Go to eBalcão (same way as Step 2 above)
Your request will appear under your open questions — click on it to view the reply and download any attachments
Good to Know
Processing times may vary during holidays or periods of high demand — allow up to 7–10 business days if needed
If you don't receive a reply within 10 business days, you can reopen the request by clicking "Reabrir" on the original question and politely following up
This is different from the Certidão de Domicílio Fiscal (Certificate of Tax Residence), which confirms your registered tax address and can be downloaded instantly via "Pedir Certidão" on the portal. See our guide on that here
