A valid passport (or EU National ID for EU/EEA nationals)
For EU/EEA nationals, please note that you must provide an EU ID card rather than a passport when applying for your NISS. The system does not accept passports for EU/EEA nationals, and using one will result in the rejection of your application.Portuguese NIF
Proof of employment
For non-EU/EEA: Proof of residence regularisation request or PT Residence Card
Due to recent updates in requirements by Segurança Social and a significant increase in rejected applications, we are no longer offering NISS services for unemployed dependents and children.
What kind of proof of employment do I need to submit for my NISS application?
Social Security requires individuals to provide proof of employment status as part of the NISS application. This is necessary for them to assess the application before granting NISS.
You need to provide one of the following:
Employment contract: Contracts can be with a Portuguese company or a foreign company. If your contract is with a foreign company, it must be for a corresponding visa (e.g., digital nomad visa), and proof of the visa application should be included; or
Proof of self-employment: Copy of the document attesting to the start of your self-employment activity, along with corresponding receipts or invoices; or
Company registration certificate: Issued by the Institute of Registries and Notary (IRN)
⚠️ If your documents are in English, you will need to provide a Portuguese translation of your documents.
For non-EU/EEA Nationals: What proof of application for residence regularisation is required for my NISS application?
Social Security requires proof of application for residence regularisation as part of the NISS application process. This helps them assess your application before granting NISS.
You need to provide one of the following:
Portuguese Visa Stamp + Proof of Application for Portugal National Visa
A photo of your passport showing the Portuguese visa stamp along with the completed application form that you submitted.
AIMA Confirmation Letter
Document confirming that your residence permit has been granted. This is given to you after you successfully complete your AIMA appointment.
